The North Elm Cemetery is located in Milam County within the heart of central Texas, 7 miles northwest of Cameron and 30 miles south of Waco. The Cemetery is situated on County Road 145, one mile south of Farm to Market Road 485. In the past, across County Road 145, there stood the North Elm Church, a parsonage for its minister and a three room school house, the North Elm School. Only the cemetery remains as a link to the past and the history of this cemetery reaches out to descendants in the immediate area, the state of Texas and across the United States.

Early pioneers of the North Elm community believed the John George Lagrone family donated the first land for the Cemetery around the time of Mr. Lagrone’s death, June 5, 1870. His was the first grave in the Cemetery. Early county records do not reflect any land deeded to the Cemetery until December 5, 1883, when B. I. Arnold deeded 6 acres from the Jose Antonio DePena League. In 1886, W. J. Valentine deeded 7 acres from the Francisco Antonio De Los Rios Survey and in 1912, J. C. Mayfield deeded 7/10 of an acre.

On March 24, 2000, the Texas Historical Commission considered the evidence of existence and historic use of the North Elm Cemetery and has listed the cemetery as a Historic Texas Cemetery, worthy of preservation. A medallion and marker will be placed within the Cemetery grounds in the Fall 2001.
